There had been a time in the later sixteenth century when it seemed that Calvinism, with its rigorous theology emphasising the sovereignty and majesty of God, its system of communal discipline, and its commitment to Scriptural authority, would extend its influence over the whole of Protestant Europe. Calvinism was confident and expansive. However, by the mid seventeenth century, this advance had been halted and Calvinism was in retreat. Surviving Calvinist societies grew marginalised, inward-looking and increasingly threatened by larger, more powerful neighbours – Calvinist Scotland by Anglican England; the Calvinist provinces of the Netherlands by Roman Catholic France; the Calvinist cantons of Switzerland by Roman Catholic France; Calvinist Hungary by Roman Catholic Austria. The future for the Calvinist regions now seemed bleak. But then, from the end of the seventeenth century, there was yet another change in their fortunes; their circumstances, and their self-perceptions, began to brighten. The vulnerable Calvinist societies re-emerged as centres of the European Enlightenment and models of religious toleration. They pioneered new forms of civil society, which enshrined notions of individual dignity, ideals of classical republican virtue, and representative government. Some Calvinist societies, most notably Scotland, the Netherlands and Prussia, also became highly successful commercial nations. Although in some respects marginalised, in other respects the Calvinist regions became centres of European renewal during an age of improvement.
